Ivy League and NESCAC money, explained honestly
The most expensive misunderstanding in college soccer is the sentence "she's being recruited by an Ivy, so it's paid for." Ivy League and NESCAC programs recruit hard and win a lot, and neither offers athletic scholarships. The money story is different, and for many families it is genuinely better. It just has to be understood on its own terms.
The Ivy League: need-based aid only
Ivy institutions award no athletic scholarships and no merit scholarships. All aid is need-based, computed from family finances. The practical consequences: a recruited athlete's aid package looks the same as a non-athlete's from the same financial situation, and for families under the schools' income thresholds the packages can be extraordinarily generous, frequently beating a partial athletic scholarship elsewhere. For high-income families, the sticker price is the price.
NESCAC and high-academic D3: no athletic money, real merit money
NESCAC schools (and most high-academic D3 programs) are Division III: no athletic scholarships anywhere in the division. Aid is need-based, and at many D3 schools, though not the NESCACs themselves, which are largely need-only, significant merit scholarships exist that have nothing to do with soccer. A strong student can stack a merit award that outlasts any coach's goodwill, because it doesn't depend on a roster spot.
What "support" means without scholarships
At these schools the coach's currency is admissions support, a finite number of slots and soft endorsements that meaningfully change acceptance odds for recruits. That support is valuable, competitive, and time-limited. It's also the reason honest early conversations about academics matter more here than anywhere else: the transcript is the scholarship.
How to compare offers that aren't offers
Comparing a D1 athletic partial against an Ivy need package against a D3 merit stack means comparing four-year net cost, not headline percentages. A "50% athletic scholarship" at a high-cost private school can cost a family more than a need-based package at a school with no scholarships at all. We build this table for every family facing the choice; the numbers usually settle arguments the brochures started.
