A feature on the back line
The Two-Way Defender

Playing style
Sydney is a strong, athletic two-way outside back who impacts the game on both sides of the ball. Equally comfortable at left or right back, she combines speed, strength, composure, and a high game IQ to defend effectively in space, win 1v1 battles, and read the game early. Once possession is won, Sydney uses her speed and technical ability to carry the ball forward, break lines, combine with teammates, overlap into the attacking third, and create opportunities from the back.
Her versatility allows her to play outside back, wingback, and center back, but her defining quality is her ability to balance defensive discipline with attacking instinct. She is composed under pressure, strong in the air, clean in the tackle, and has the recovery speed and work rate to get up and down the flank throughout the game.
Sydney is also a team-first player and vocal presence on the field. Coaches trust her in different roles and situations because of her work ethic, coachability, competitiveness, and ability to understand and adapt to what the team needs. She brings energy to her teammates, communicates from the back, and takes pride in competing for the players around her.
Every date she is playing between September and May, in order. Showcases and cups are marked; the rest are league fixtures.

Reports
Roddick was another outside back who was excellent in every event on Sunday. There was speed testing at the start where she finished near the top in every category. The outside back was also a top performer during the position specific training. There were moments when she shined as a two-way player. She put in a couple of tough tackles to just stand up the opposition. Roddick was also a bright spot during the 11 v 11 games. She has the quality to get into the attack with the ball at her feet. She can burst past players with her elite top speed.
She played primarily as a left back, but moved up once her team was in the attacking third. Sydney's strong throw-ins almost resulted in a goal or two. She sent one to the penalty area to a teammate who struck it cleanly, but it pinged off the crossbar. Sydney also made clean tackles, strong headers, and showed footwork skills to play the ball from the back line. More of a box-to-box player who can deliver on both ends of the pitch.
A centerpiece of the LA Breakers FC 2011 ECNL backline, Sydney Roddick (LB/RB) returns from a dominant high school season at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy where she was named Angelus League Defensive MVP and 1st Team All-League on a defense that surrendered the fewest goals in the league. Her combination of defensive discipline and offensive instinct makes her one of the most versatile defenders in the 2011 pool. A technically sharp, two-way defender with strong game IQ, she's one to watch as club season heats up.
She's a versatile wingback who thrives on either side; her elite athleticism, combining speed, strength, agility, and height, allows her to disrupt attacks and transition into the offensive third with ease. At Surf Cup, she was a consistent force down the flank, demonstrating her stamina, game awareness, and ability to drive plays forward through precise distribution and sharp reads of the field. A vocal leader and composed defender, Roddick brings both grit and polish to the back line and is expected to make an immediate impact at the high school level as she enters her freshman year. Her Surf Cup performance also drew praise from a highly respected professional coach with multiple ECNL national championships, who highlighted her elite athleticism, work rate, and professional-level composure. Looking forward to seeing her in our next rankings update.
Sydney is a dynamic defender, playing wingback and/or winger. She possesses a strong combination of overall athleticism, agility, physical strength, height, and speed with technical skills in tackling, ball control, and passing. She has good tactical awareness to position well and read the game effectively, with an ability to scan and make quick decisions to dribble into space, make short passes, initiate give-and-go plays, or launch longer range passes from deep areas.
Roddick makes things look so easy and so smooth. She has such fluid and athletic movements to where she always seems to be in complete control. Even when she's being physical with a wide forward, it looks effortless and controlled. She's very smooth on the ball and does a good job of pushing the ball into space and using her speed to beat defenders. She is precise in her movements, crisp and accurate with her passes as she is fantastic about picking the right ball to play. She is a dual threat as she can go forward and help in the attack, but she always tracks back and does not forget about her defensive responsibilities.
Evaluations
Sydney is a strong, intelligent, and versatile defender who has the ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball. She reads the game well, is composed under pressure, strong in 1v1 situations, and has the speed and physical presence to defend effectively in space.
What makes Sydney especially valuable is her versatility. While defending is her primary position, she has the technical ability, athleticism, and confidence to step into attacking roles when needed. She can win possession, carry the ball forward, break lines, and become a legitimate attacking threat rather than simply distributing from the back.
At the high-school level, Sydney's consistency and defensive impact earned her League Defensive Player of the Year. She is a player I can trust in different roles and situations because of her ability to understand the game and adapt to what the team needs.
I had the pleasure of coaching Sydney Roddick in Cal South ODP Regional Championships. Sydney is the type of player coaches always look for in their program. She has a wonderful personality, a bit shy but a true warrior when on the field. Sydney is coachable, extremely hard worker and is willing to put it all on the field for her teammates and Coach. Very diverse in multiple positions with a high game IQ. Definitely the type of player that can step into any program and adjust with the guidance of her coach.
